The short answer
Prephrasing helps when the argument has one obvious gap and hurts when it does not. The technique itself is sound; the failure mode is treating your prediction as a template that an answer choice must match, because the test is not obligated to phrase the correct answer the way you did.
This matters because of how wrong answers are built. All four incorrect choices are written deliberately, and several of them are written to look like what a reasonable test-taker would expect to see. A prediction narrows your attention, and a narrowed attention is easier to aim at the wrong target.
So the useful question is not "should I prephrase?" but "what am I doing when my prephrase does not appear?" Students who answer that question well tend to keep improving. Students who answer it by hunting for the closest-looking match tend to plateau.
What prephrasing is actually good at
Prephrasing is genuinely strong on questions where the logical gap is narrow and mechanical. Sufficient Assumption is the clearest case: the argument moves from a stated premise to a conclusion that introduces a new term, and the correct answer has to bridge those two terms. There is often only one bridge available, so predicting it before you read the choices is fast and reliable.
It also works well on straightforward causal Weaken questions. If an argument concludes that A caused B on the basis of a correlation, you can predict the shape of the answer — an alternative cause, a reversal of the causal direction, or a case where A occurred without B — before reading anything. You are not predicting exact wording. You are predicting a category.
That distinction is the whole game. Predicting a category ("this answer will rule out an alternative explanation") is robust. Predicting a sentence ("this answer will say the researchers ignored diet") is brittle, because the test may rule out a different alternative explanation you never considered, and your sentence-level prediction will make that correct answer feel wrong.
How a prephrase gets used against you
The four wrong answers on a Logical Reasoning question are not filler. They are constructed to be attractive to particular mistakes, and one of the most predictable mistakes is over-commitment to an expected answer.
The pattern looks like this. You read a stimulus, form a prediction, and scan the choices. Choice (B) contains several of the same nouns as your prediction and has roughly the same shape. It feels like a match, so you select it and move on with high confidence. Choice (D), which was correct, used different vocabulary and described the gap from an angle you had not considered, so you eliminated it in under two seconds.
The tell is the confidence. Questions you miss quickly and confidently are more often prephrase-matching errors than genuine knowledge gaps. If you review a section and find misses where you never seriously considered the correct answer, that is worth investigating as a process problem rather than a content problem.
Note what is happening mechanically: the prephrase converted an evaluation task into a matching task. Evaluating asks "does this choice do the job the question stem requires?" Matching asks "does this choice resemble what I already decided?" Only the first question is the one being scored.
Prephrase the task, not the sentence
A more durable habit is to prephrase at the level of the job rather than the wording. Before reading the choices, say what the correct answer has to accomplish. Not what it will say — what it has to do.
On a Necessary Assumption question, the job is: this answer must be something the argument cannot survive without. On a Flaw question, the job is: this answer must describe, in abstract terms, the specific error the author made. On a Strengthen question, the job is: this answer must make the conclusion more likely to follow, by any available route.

The pattern in that table is worth stating directly: prephrasing is reliable exactly where the correct answer is constrained, and unreliable where many different statements could be correct. Inference questions are the clearest case — a stimulus can support a dozen valid inferences, and you have no way of knowing which one the test chose to write down.
What to do when your prephrase does not appear
Treat the absence as information rather than as a problem. If nothing resembles your prediction, the most likely explanation is that you misidentified the gap, not that the test omitted the right answer.
The move is to abandon the prediction deliberately and switch to elimination. Go through the choices and give each one a reason it fails — a reason you could say out loud. "Out of scope" is not a reason unless you can name the scope it falls outside of. "Too strong" is not a reason unless you can point to the word that overstates and explain what the argument actually supports.
This is the discipline that separates reliable elimination from vibes-based elimination. Eliminating a choice because its phrasing feels unfamiliar is not analysis. Abstract or awkward wording is frequently a property of correct answers, especially on Method and Flaw questions, precisely because the test knows unfamiliar phrasing feels wrong.
When you are down to two, a useful tiebreaker on most question types is to prefer the answer that requires you to assume less. Weaker, more hedged answers are often correct on Inference and Must Be True questions because they are easier to support. On Strengthen and Weaken, by contrast, a stronger answer can be correct, since the task is to move the argument rather than to be guaranteed by it. Match the answer strength to what the stem is asking for.
The common mistake
The most common version of this error is silent, which is what makes it durable. Students do not notice they are matching rather than evaluating, because matching feels like understanding.
A second version shows up in review. A student misses a question, reads the explanation, sees why the credited answer is correct, and thinks "I get it." But they never ask why they eliminated it in the first place. The knowledge gap gets patched; the process that produced the miss does not.
A more useful review question is: what did I believe about the correct answer at the moment I crossed it off? If the honest answer is "it did not look like what I expected," you have found a prephrasing problem, and no amount of additional content study will fix it.
The third version is over-correction. Some students read this kind of advice and stop thinking before the choices entirely, which leaves them reading five options with no framework and picking whichever sounds most agreeable. That is worse. The goal is to hold a flexible expectation, not to hold none.
A worked example
Stimulus: "Residents of Ashford who commute by bicycle report higher job satisfaction than residents who commute by car. City officials concluded that cycling to work improves how people feel about their jobs."
Question: Which one of the following, if true, most weakens the argument?
A rigid prephrase might be: "the answer will say something about exercise not affecting mood." That is a sentence-level prediction, and it is likely to fail.
A task-level prephrase is: "this is a causal conclusion from a correlation, so the answer will break the causal link — most likely by supplying an alternative cause or by reversing the direction."
Now suppose the correct answer reads: "Ashford residents who already find their jobs rewarding are more likely to have chosen flexible positions that permit a bicycle commute." A student matching against the first prephrase sees nothing about exercise or mood and skips past it. A student holding the task-level expectation recognizes it immediately as a reversal — satisfaction leading to cycling rather than cycling leading to satisfaction.
Same stimulus, same answer, different outcome. The difference was the grain of the prediction.
How to practice this
Try a constrained drill on a set of questions you have already done. Read the stimulus and stem, then write one sentence describing what the correct answer must accomplish — without guessing its content. Then read the choices and give each of the four wrong answers a specific reason it fails.
If you cannot articulate a reason for a wrong answer beyond how it sounds, that question is not finished, even though you got it right. Questions you answered correctly through a lucky match are future misses that have not happened yet.
Do this untimed at first. The point is not speed — it is building the habit of holding an expectation loosely enough that an unexpected correct answer can still get through.
