The short answer: loosely, and not reliably enough to plan around
Logical Reasoning sections generally drift from easier to harder, but the drift is a tendency, not a rule. The order is loose enough that building a timing plan on it will cost you points.
The practical consequence is the part most students miss: a genuinely difficult question can appear in the first ten. It is not unusual for the single hardest question in a section to sit early, well before the stretch where students expect trouble. Meanwhile, the last few questions are often merely long rather than hard — a wordy stimulus that reads slowly but tests something ordinary.
So the honest description is: mild upward drift, high local variance. That combination is worse than either a strict difficulty ladder or pure randomness, because it gives you just enough of a pattern to trust and not enough to rely on.
What the difficulty curve actually looks like
Picture a line that slopes gently upward with large bumps scattered along it. Early questions skew easier on average, later questions skew harder on average, and individual questions deviate from that average constantly.
Part of the reason is that question order is not built as a difficulty ladder in the first place. A section has to distribute question types, stimulus lengths, and subject matter across roughly twenty-five items in 35 minutes. Those constraints shape the sequence at least as much as difficulty does.
There is also a personal layer. Difficulty is not purely a property of the question — it is a property of the question meeting your particular gaps. A question that most test-takers find routine will feel brutal if it turns on the one translation you never nailed down. Your personal difficulty curve is bumpier than the average one, and the bumps sit wherever your weak spots are.
Why a hard question shows up early
Because nothing in the section's design prevents it. There is no rule reserving difficulty for the back half, and the constraints that do shape order — type variety, length distribution, topic spread — will happily place a nasty question at number four.
Early-question difficulty also tends to be a different flavor. Late-section difficulty is often bulk: a long stimulus, dense answer choices, more to hold in your head. Early-section difficulty is more often precision: a short stimulus with a subtle scope issue, or an answer set where four choices are eliminated for genuinely fine reasons.
That difference matters because short questions feel like they should be quick. When a five-line stimulus takes you two minutes, the length tells you that you are failing while the clock tells you that you are behind. Neither reading is accurate, and both are demoralizing.
The most common mistake: banking time on the early questions
The single most expensive habit that comes out of the difficulty-order assumption is rushing the first ten questions to build a time cushion for the last ten. This trades points you were going to get for a chance at points you probably were not.
Look at what the trade actually is. Early questions are, on average, the ones you are most likely to answer correctly. Speeding through them raises your error rate on your highest-probability points in order to buy minutes for your lowest-probability points. Even if the cushion works exactly as intended, the arithmetic is bad.
The second failure mode is emotional. If you believe questions arrive in difficulty order and you hit a wall at question four, the natural inference is that something has gone wrong — that you are having a bad section or that this test is unusually hard. Students then either burn four minutes refusing to let the question beat them, or rattle through the next several questions with their confidence dented. The question was just hard. Its position meant nothing.
A third, quieter version: assuming the last questions must be the hardest and pre-emptively guessing on them without reading. Late questions are frequently long rather than difficult, and a long question you understand is worth more than a short one you skipped.
What to do instead: judge the question, not its number
Replace position-based triage with engagement-based triage. Decide whether to stay on a question using evidence from the question itself, not from where it sits in the section.
The cleanest rule is to define progress mechanically. After roughly a minute on a question, ask a concrete thing: have I eliminated any answer choices for an actual reason? If yes, you are converting time into information and should usually continue. If you have eliminated nothing — or you have only crossed off choices because they felt off — you are not making progress and should mark it and move.
The value of that rule is that it is falsifiable. "I feel like I'm close" is not evidence; it is the same feeling you get right before you spend three minutes and pick the trap. "I have ruled out B and D because each contradicts the second premise" is evidence. Tying your stay-or-go decision to eliminations keeps the decision honest under time pressure.
Then treat every question as if it arrived with no number attached. Read it, judge it, and give it time proportional to how much traction you are getting — not to where you are in the section.
Speed comes from faster elimination, not faster reading
When students say they need to work faster, they almost always mean they need to read faster. That is usually the wrong lever. Most of the time lost in a Logical Reasoning section is spent in the answer choices, not the stimulus.
Consider where the minutes actually go on a question that runs long. Rarely is it the twenty seconds of reading the stimulus. It is the ninety seconds of cycling between two remaining choices, re-reading both, and waiting to feel certain. Reading the stimulus faster does not touch that ninety seconds — and reading it faster often lengthens it, because a shaky grasp of the argument is exactly what makes two answers look identical.
Sharper elimination attacks the part that is actually expensive. If you can articulate why a choice is wrong the first time you read it, you do not revisit it. Speed, in other words, is mostly a byproduct of understanding the argument well enough that the wrong answers announce themselves. Accuracy tends to produce speed more reliably than speed produces accuracy.
This is also why finishing early is not a goal worth chasing. You are given 35 minutes. Using all of them deliberately is not a weakness; needing more than them is the signal worth acting on.
A concrete example of the trap
Here is the shape of an early question that punches above its position. Suppose question three reads roughly: <em>Residents who installed the new water filters reported fewer instances of unpleasant-tasting tap water. The filters must therefore be removing the minerals responsible for the taste.</em> The question asks what the argument assumes.
It is four lines long and sits in the friendly part of the section, so the instinct is to answer it in forty seconds. But the argument moves from a self-reported perception to a specific physical mechanism, and there are at least two gaps in that move: whether the reports track an actual change, and whether minerals are what was causing the taste at all. A tempting wrong answer will address the reports being accurate — real, but not the gap the conclusion's mechanism depends on.
Nothing about "question three" warned you about any of that. A student running a position-based plan gives this forty seconds, takes the plausible-sounding choice, and moves on feeling fine. A student running an engagement-based plan notices at the one-minute mark that they have eliminated two choices for real reasons, decides that is progress, and spends the extra thirty seconds it takes to separate the last two.
The section's structure gave both students the same information. Only one of them was in a position to use it.
How to practice this
Start logging question numbers next to your misses. After several timed sections you will have your own difficulty map, and it will almost certainly show misses distributed more widely than you expected. Seeing that on your own data does more to dislodge the difficulty-order assumption than being told about it.
Then practice the one-minute progress check explicitly. During timed sections, when a question crosses roughly a minute, consciously ask whether you have eliminated anything for a stated reason, and act on the answer. It will feel mechanical at first. That is the point — it is replacing a feeling with a criterion.
Finally, review your early-section misses with the same seriousness you give your late-section misses. Students tend to write off an early miss as carelessness and study a late miss as a concept gap. Often it is the reverse: the early miss found a real weakness in a short question, and the late miss was fatigue.
